We had our holiday concert on Friday. Each grade level sang a song, then the choir entertained us with some singing. Lastly, we had a school wide sing-a-long. What a fun way to kick off our winter break!
Patiently waiting for the concert to begin
Here is Mrs. Lundmark leading the 2nd grade classes in singing their song.

A New Way to Look at Hopscotch
We've been working on the o_e pattern this week. We practiced reading o_e words with the always fun game of hopscotch. I must say, though, that it has been quite a while since I've done hopscotch so the kids had to refresh my memory a bit. Here was our twist to the game: There was an o_e word in each box that they had to read as they hopped in that box. They had a great time. I was thinking about leaving the boards on the tile (I used a wet erase marker) so we could do hopscotch with other words we're learning about. After some thought, though, I think it may be best to wash them off and just redraw them when we want to do it again. I wouldn't want it to stain the tile.
In science, we are learning about what animals do to adapt in the winter (hibernation, migration, change color). Have your child tell you about what they learned. For example, I learned that before woodchucks hibernate, they eat so much that their stomachs drag on the ground. Today we learned about gray whale migration.
Next week, we will start learning about the holiday celebrations of Las Posadas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa and Christmas. That will take us into the final week before winter break.
We will also be finishing Unit 5 in our Everyday Math series prior to winter break. We'll start Unit 6 when we come back from vacation.
Don't forget about our field trip to the Children's Theater in SLC on December 17th. Chaperone space is very limited (I believe we can take 2 parents from each classroom) so I will be getting in touch with you, soon, about that if you checked that you'd like to chaperone.
Will you join me in doing the snow dance? :)
