Fractions!

We recently finished our Unit 8 in Everyday Math--fractions. At the end of our unit, we did a couple of fun fractions activities. We practiced reading, writing, saying, and showing fractions.

We made fraction pizzas. The kids had to read their recipe cards and get their ingredients.

Then they copied their recipes onto a paper.

We also made fraction kites.

For our next unit in math, we will be working on measurement (measuring in inches, centimeters, yards; area; perimeter; capacity).

Special Guests

We have been studying the Iditarod for the past couple of weeks. We anxiously await the first musher's arrival in Nome. As a class, we are following 2 mushers: Paul Gebhardt and Aliy Zirkle. We had some special guests one day--a musher and some sled dogs! The kids were so excited to see actual sled dogs up close. One of the dogs had even run in the Iditarod 3 times with Martin Buser. It was such a wonderful experience for the kids. (Another 2nd grade class and the 3 5th grade classes joined us, too.)

That big dog's name is Goof. He was one of the kids' favorites.

One of our students even got to sit in the sled.
