First Week of School

We had a great first week of school!  We are really working hard on practicing our rules and procedures for our classrooms.  Maestra Anabel and I met with both classes on the first day of school so  we could establish the rules together.

We look forward to meeting with you at the Back to School Night this Thursday, September 5th, from 5-6 p.m.  All 2nd grade families will meet in room D4 where Maestra Anabel and I will have a short presentation, followed by time for you to ask any questions you may have.

Here is a look at some of the work we did in class last week:

After reading Chrysanthemum, we talked about things that make us wilt and things that make us bloom.

We also talked about the differences between toys and math tools.  This will get the students ready to use the math manipulatives as tools, not toys, during math lessons.

I will be implementing The Daily 5 in our classroom this year.  This will take the place of "centers" while I am working with reading groups.  The Daily 5 consists of Read to Self, Read with Someone, Listen to Reading, Word Work, and Work on Writing.  We have, so far, worked on Read to Self.  Our goal while practicing has been to build our stamina so the children can read for longer periods of time.  We made this anchor chart as a reminder of our behaviors during Read to Self.

Welcome!

Welcome to 2nd Grade!  It is going to be a great year!

Here is some information to get us started for the new school year:

We will be having an Open House on Friday, August 23rd from 2-3 p.m.  This will be an opportunity for students to find their classrooms and meet their teachers, Mrs. Tullis and Maestra Anabel.

Utah has adopted the Common Core standards.  This means that all states who have adopted these standards will be working towards the same grade-level goals for that year.  I will have copies of both math and language arts at the Back to School Night, which will be held on Thursday, September 5th.  The Back to School Night will be the time when we talk about curriculum, assessments, schedules, etc...

Language Arts:
We will be using the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys program this year.  I will also supplement with other materials, as needed.

Math:
Park City School District adopted the My Math program, which we will be using this year.  Most of your child's math instruction will be taught in Spanish, with reinforcements of vocabulary and important concepts in English on a daily basis. We will also be putting a lot of focus on tasks (open-ended responses) and collaboration.  Sharing, talking with others, and justifying solutions will also be an integral part of our math instruction.

Homework:
TBA

I look forward to working with you and your child this year!

Mrs. Tullis
