Specialist Schedules

A Lot Going On...

I apologize for the lapse in blogging.  Hopefully, I can get on a "weekly blog update" schedule here soon.

We have been busy!  We are starting week 4 in our language arts program.  This week, we will focus on cause and effect, nouns, writing to narrate: true story, and long o/u/e.  In Math, the focus continues to be on addition and subtraction strategies.  These include doubles, near doubles, making a ten, fact families, counting on, and counting back.

We are very slowly starting the Daily 5 in our classroom.  First, I introduced "Read to Self."

Each student has their own book baggy.  We have talked about how to choose a book. The book should fit a purpose for your reading and interest you.  You should be able to comprehend the book and know most of the words in the book.

We have been working on building our stamina.

Then, I introduced "Work on Writing."

This is the board students can choose from when working on their writing.

Next, I introduced "Read to Someone."

This week, I will introduce "Word Work."  We have already worked with Wiki Stix, though, which will be in the Word Work station.

A couple of weeks ago, we talked about compare and contrast.  To practice, we talked about how an apple is different from an orange and how they are the same.

Then, I put students into pairs and they compared and contrasted themselves with their partners, using a venn diagram.

Last week, for writing, we worked on adding details to our writing.  We talked about how using our 5 senses can help us do this.  Students planned, and then wrote about, their neighborhoods, using descriptive words.

I wanted to show you what our focus wall looks like during a typical week.  These are the language arts skills we focus on each week.  Missing from this picture are our spelling words, high frequency words, and vocabulary words (located at the bottom of our focus wall).

The "I'm Done" chart is what students go to when they complete their work.

I also wanted to showcase some of the work from Maestra Anabel's classroom:
