Welcome to 2nd Grade!! It is going to be a great year!
Here is some information to get us started for the new school year:
Our Back to School Night will be held on Thursday, September 6th. At 5:00, everyone will meet in the gymnasium for introductions. Breakout sessions will be held at 5:20 and 5:40. This will be the chance to talk more in depth with me regarding curriculum, homework, etc....
Utah has adopted the Common Core standards. This means that all states who have adopted these standards will be working towards the same grade-level goals for that year. I will have copies of both the language arts and math common core standards at Back to School night. You can also check them out here. Grade 2 Math Standards begin on page 17. Grade 2 English Language Arts Standards begin on page 10.
Language Arts:
We will be using the Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Journeys program this year. I also supplement with other materials, as needed.
Math:
Since we did adopt the Utah Common Core standards, math will look much different this year. We will still be utilizing Everyday Math but will no longer start at unit 1 and end at unit 12. While we will use some Everyday Math lessons, much of our work will be from other supplemental materials. We will also be putting much more focus on tasks (open ended responses) and collaboration. Sharing, talking with others, and justifying solutions will be included in our daily math lessons.
Homework:
Homework will go home on Mondays and is due Fridays. Your child's homework packet will include math assignments, spelling lists, and a reading log.
Behavior:
Our classroom rules will focus around our school's R.O.C.K. acronym. R=respect; O=organization; C=cooperation; K=kindness. Each student will have a behavior chart on his/her desk. Children receive stars for following the rules and direction and checks for not following the rules/directions. Rewards and consequences are listed on the behavior chart.
I look forward to working with you and your child this year. Please let me know if you have any questions.
