Writer's Workshop Galore!

Last week, we had a review week for language arts and took our Unit 3 benchmark test for Journeys.  This gave us ample opportunities for writer's workshop.  The kids are coming up with some great stories, both fiction and nonfiction.  I am excited to share these with you at conferences!

We also finished up our unit about matter.  We tied in a little bit about weather and clouds as we talked about evaporation.  For our science project, we will be making rock candy to witness how a liquid (sugar water) can turn into a solid.  Pics to come soon!

This week in math, we will be starting 3-digit addition with and without regrouping.

Science:  using our senses (except taste) to record properties of solids

Science:  clouds (how they form and 3 different types)

Lots to Share!

There has been a lot going on in our 2nd grade world!

We used a program called Comic Touch on the iPads to practice writing 4 kinds of sentences (statements, questions, exclamations, and commands).

Mountain Town Music brought a great band to our school...

We studies Holidays Around the World.  For the Netherlands, we made "wooden" shoes.

After reading about how Mexico celebrates the holiday, we made poinsettias with shaving cream and red food coloring.

For the past month, our writing focus has been on persuasive writing.  We tied in a couple of holiday activities to our writing.   The kids wrote a persuasive paragraph to Santa to be one of his reindeer.  They also wrote a persuasive paragraph to Santa to be one of his elves.

For grammar, we have been working on proper nouns.  In spelling, our focus has been on long vowel sounds (ee, ea, oa, ow, o, ai, ay).  We will be starting a "states of matter" science unit after break.  We will also tie this unit in to our class science fair project.  I am very excited for this unit because we will be doing a lot of experiments, which I know the students will really enjoy.

Our focus in math has been 2-digit addition with and without regrouping.  We will be starting 2-digit subtraction (with and without regrouping) after break.  To practice our addition, we have been playing a lot of games during our math centers time.

I wish you and your families a happy and healthy 2013!
