It's hard to believe it is already February! We've been busy as usual in our classroom.
To celebrate our 100th day of school, I gave each student a 1-0-0 and had them make something out of those numbers. There was a lot of creativity!
We started talking about the Iditarod a couple of weeks ago. To integrate the Iditarod and math, we got together with our buddies to work on some Iditarod-themed math tasks/problems.
Two weeks ago, our comprehension skill was Understanding Characters. To help us understand the main character in our anthology story, Gloria, we brainstormed traits to describe her by things she said, did, and thought. Then, we made pictures of Gloria with the trait and an example of how she showed that trait in the story.
Last week, our phonics skill was the /ar/ sound. To practice, we brainstormed words with the /ar/ sound.
Then, each student wrote about 10-15 /ar/ words on their star. Finally, they had to walk around to partners and ask each other how to spell the words (without looking at their star, of course).
This past week, our comprehension skill was Text and Graphic Features. To practice finding text and graphic features around our school, we used the digital cameras to take pictures of signs around the school. We uploaded the photos to iPhoto. After break, we will take the photos and make a comic life. I will post those pictures soon.
The kids had a blast at our Valentine's Day celebration. We passed out valentines, ate healthy snacks, and worked on an activity packet.
One of the activities was graphing the type of valentines they received.
Here are a couple of events coming up after Winter Break:
February 27th: field trip to Kimball Arts Center for the Art of Brick (lego) exhibit
March 4th: We will be having a musher come to our school to talk about mushing and, of course, his dogs.
