And We're Off!

We are off and running in room D4!  What an amazing group of kiddos--so eager to learn.

Our first day of school was a little different than in past years.  Our school is implementing a positive behavior support system at McPolin.  Part of this process is explicitly explaining and modeling school-wide expectations and procedures.  After a short assembly in the gym, students went through a series of 4 rotations in common areas around the school.  Classroom expectations and procedures were modeled and practiced in the classroom (and continue to be discussed and practiced on a daily basis).

Our school has a McPolin Moose Promise!

We worked on an activity to help students learn the promise.

After reading Mrs. Spritzer's Garden, each class planted a class plant and decorated the pot with thumbprints and their names.

I use Daily 5 in my classroom.  When students are working independently, they have a choice of learning activities:  Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, and Listen to Reading.  So far, we have practiced Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, and Word Work.

We had our first art class with Mrs. Kimche!  Students made a tree of life with geometric and organic shapes.  If you are in the school, be sure to check out their amazing artwork in our hallway.

Each 2nd grader has their own laptop this year!  With this amazing privilege comes great responsibility.  Each child needs to have their parent(s) sign the paper that should have come home this past Friday.  Each child will sign the paper, as well.

Welcome!

Welcome to the 2017-2018 school year!  I am so excited to get to know you and your child this year.

The first day of school for students is Thursday, August 24th.  I hope you are able to join us at our Open House on Tuesday, August 22nd at 3:00 p.m.  This would be a great time for Maestra Czarnecki and me to meet you and your child and, also, get them acquainted with their classrooms before the first day of school.

Like last year (if you were at McPolin), half of your child's day will be in English and half in Spanish.  We will talk more about schedules and academics at our Back To School Night on September 7th.  Our focus for the first couple of weeks of school will be to build a classroom community and practice our routines and procedures.

About Me:

This will be my 10th year teaching 2nd grade at McPolin.  Before moving to Park City, I taught Special Education for 7 years in Anchorage, Alaska.  My husband, Andy, is the Instructional Coach at McPolin.  We have 2 children.  Emma (7) will be in 2nd grade at McPolin and Abigail (4) in is Pre-K at the Park City School District Child Care Center. When I am not in school, I enjoy going on adventures with my family, running, hiking, camping, reading, and crafting.

BioEYES

Last week, the students had the incredible opportunity to be scientists!  A HUGE "thank you" to Lauren Strachan, Claire Finken's mom, for bringing BioEYES into our classroom and allowing students to witness the lifecycle of a zebrafish.

Table groups worked together to prepare their habitats for their zebrafish.

Each student had a notebook to document their findings, just like real scientists.

Oh, the observations the students made!

Can you see the eggs?

The kids loved looking through the microscope!
